![]() ![]() This is one of my most treasured moments in ANY Grateful Dead show - it's not often I want to stand up and salute the crowd, but in this case, whomever you all were - this is just simply fantastic. When the band arrives onstage there is the usual hooting and whistling, etc., but those who realize they're ACTUALLY MAKING GODDAMNED MUSIC WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD continue, and the audience's presence is more than just an aside it becomes an integral and vital part of the rhythm section as the overall sound builds to a nice, loud level. but listening to this, seriously, bless each and every one of you that night at Winterland who contributed to this - it goes beyond mere "audience participation" - the crowd clearly hones in on what is not the easiest percussion time in the world and, within a few minutes is totally synched up. Usually I'm wary of overabundant crowd noise and idle chatter, etc. A word on 10/22/78 - going to type on this source's review section due to the opening of the show and "Ollin Arageed" - this recording of the pageantry and sublime beauty of what was achieved that night in Winterland is best captured here.
